How to Regulate Carbon in Construction

In its Summer Edition, EcoHabitar Magazine No. 78 – Summer 2023 invited our studio to contribute an article on decarbonization: “Regulating Carbon in Construction.”

The piece, written by our partner Jade Serra, is the first in a series of articles on decarbonization in construction that will be published in upcoming issues.

This initial installment addresses the difference between operational carbon and embodied carbon, highlighting the importance of focusing on the latter. Embodied carbon refers to the emissions associated with the production of construction materials—an impact that becomes increasingly significant as buildings grow more energy-efficient.

The article reviews the decarbonization strategies already underway in several European countries, all of which begin with quantifying emissions in order to set measurable limits. It also suggests practical ways to reduce carbon footprints, such as applying circular economy principles and using biobased materials.

It concludes with a call to raise awareness within the industry: the limits of our natural resources—long ignored—are now more evident than ever. A paradigm shift is needed, one that embraces a mindset of resource sufficiency.
